Parents and guardians,

This letter is meant to inform you that our students will begin taking the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) Exam on April 4, 2017.  The PSSA is a standardized exam that is administered to all students in grades 3-8 in Pennsylvania’s public and charter schools and measures a student’s level of proficiency in the areas of English Language Arts (ELA), Mathematics, and Science.  The PSSA is used by the Pennsylvania Department of Education as part of their procedures to determine school and educator effectiveness.

The table below is the 2017 PSSA Exam Schedule.  Please examine this schedule and contact Mr. Perkins, Mrs. Suleski, or Mr. Smith with any questions.  We would also like to ask you to spend some time talking to your child about doing their best on each day for every exam.  Please mention to your child that the PSSA is a reflection of their learning and growth as a student and should be taken very seriously.  Furthermore, the comprehensive results of our school’s PSSA scores will become public knowledge that further exemplifies the talents of our students and faculty.  As a parent/guardian, you can support your child by making sure they get a good night sleep and eat breakfast the morning of each exam.

I would also like to inform you that the Pennsylvania Department of Education and Freedom Area School District have a very strict cell phone and electronic device policy for the PSSA.  Students are NOT permitted to bring cell phones, smartphones, and/or any other electronic device which can easily photograph and share materials into their testing room during any PSSA Exam.  Students that are caught copying or duplicating material from the PSSA will be required to retest and could face charges for the cost of replacing compromised test items up to $30,000 for a single violation.  On each day of our PSSA Exams, it would be greatly appreciated if you could have your child leave their electronic devices at home and direct any emergency calls to the middle school office.  Students that bring their electronic devices to school will be required to turn them in before taking the PSSA Exam.
